Custom Paper Tube Guide: Artwork Process

Step 1: Pick Tube Style and Determine Tube Size

Choosing the right tube style is the first step in creating custom paper tube packaging. There are three main tube styles to consider: the one-piece paper tube, the two-piece hatbox style paper tube, and the classic three-piece paper tube. While you can usually select the style you prefer, some types may be more popular for specific applications. For instance, when packaging wine and spirits, the one-piece paper tube with metal lids and bottoms is the most common choice.

Determining the correct tube size is crucial for successful custom cardboard packaging tubes. Be sure to provide your packaging manufacturer with as many sizing details as possible. If you plan to include additional items like pamphlets, booklets, or accessories inside the tube, inform your packaging supplier to allow for extra inner space.

Once the tube style and dimensions are confirmed, we will create a blank design template, also known as a die line template, for you to use in your graphic design work.

Step 2: Preparing your artwork

The die line template serves as a structural outline for decorations and furnishings on a building (artwork). It is essential to hire a professional designer who can effectively combine your design ideas, branding elements, and product information on the template.

Here are some important notes and guidelines regarding the design template:

• Format: Preferred formats are AI, PDF, and EPS.
• Color Mode: The file must be in CMYK (Process) mode, without any RGB or spot colors, except for white ink spot color. To change this, go to File → Document Color Mode → CMYK Color.
• Black Color: Use 100% black (C0, M0, Y0, K100) for all black elements. Avoid using Registration or rich black.
• Text: Ensure that all text in the file is properly outlined. To do this, select all text objects and go to Object → Type → Create Outlines.
• Images: Embed all images in your file, ensuring they are at least 300 dpi to maintain printing quality; the higher the resolution, the better.
• Template Integrity: Do not flatten or alter the ratio, dimensions, or lines of the template (die line).
• Special Finishes: If you require special finishes (e.g., UV, foiling, embossing, or debossing), please vectorize the specific graphic elements or areas that need these finishes. Additionally, create a separate layer for these special finishes within the same file. If no special finishes are needed, you can disregard this requirement.

Keep in mind that certain industries may have specific packaging and labeling laws. Ensure that your artwork design complies with these regulations. For instance, cannabis packaging requires warning symbols and specific label sizes that vary by state. It is advisable to consult the official government website for the most up-to-date requirements.

Finally, after completing the graphic design, you may need to submit your artwork to the relevant government bureau for official approval.

Step 3: Finalizing your artwork

Once the artwork receives approval, the graphic design process is nearly complete. At this stage, you can submit the artwork to your packaging manufacturer for sampling.

There are two options for paper tube sampling: digital-printing samples and mass-production-level samples.

• Option 1: Digital-Printing Samples
Digital-printed samples are created using digital printing, similar to what is done with a home color printer. The printing results and color matching may not be highly accurate. Typically, these samples do not include special surface treatments such as embossing, foil stamping, or spot UV. However, they are sufficient for reviewing the design layout, initial packaging appearance, and especially for checking the fit of the tubes. The sampling process is quick (2-3 days), cost-effective (we offer free sampling), and is recommended for most pre-production evaluations.

Option 2: Mass-Production-Level Samples
Mass-production-level samples are analogous to the finished tube packaging you will receive from the final mass-production run. These samples are produced using professional litho printing, resulting in significantly better printing quality and color accuracy. If your artwork incorporates special finishes (such as embossing, foil stamping, or spot UV), and your order quantity is substantial, pursuing this type of sample is advisable.

The mass-production sampling process is more expensive due to the necessary formal set-ups for printing and finishing. Additionally, these samples may take over a week to produce. However, they are worthwhile for larger order sizes.

With the physical samples in hand, you can finalize your artwork. This allows you to evaluate details such as whether certain fonts need resizing, if the design layout is visually appealing, if the special surface treatments match your expectations, and most importantly, if the tube size is appropriate.
